Seeking artist for ‘English School’

A new query for the network:

“…. an interesting double portrait which I acquired as ‘English School’ and I was wondering if it could be possible to attribute an artist to it? It seems to have a strong stylistic similarity to Sarah Hoadly’s portrait of her husband Bishop Benjamin Hoadly in the National Portrait Gallery, however little is known of her oeuvre so comparisons are few and far between.”

Do get in touch below with any thoughts.

  • Re the identity of the sitters:
My first, quick impression: maybe a young Jonathan Swift and his lady ‘friend’, “Vanessa”
(the woman’s got attitude! note her sly eyes, ironic smile — almost a sneer?). I shall be
interested to see any confirmed information on the I.D. of this couple. Yes, a good query!
